A Taxonomy for the Configurations of Quadruply Lensed Quasars

| Summary:

A simple, novice-friendly scheme for classifying the image configurations of
quadruply lensed quasars is proposed. With only six classes, it is
intentionally coarse-grained. Readers are invited to test drive the scheme on a
sample of 12 quadruply lensed quasar systems. The taxonomy is effectively 2+1
dimensional in that the angular configuration of the images couples only weakly
to the non-circularity of the configuration. The scheme can be extended to
systems for which the lensing galaxy is observed, at the price of an added
dimension.
